When I was a younger geek, I can still remember what was dubbed as an “UnHoly Marriage Between” Microsoft and IBM. This was a time when every IBM system comes with PC-DOS a verson of Microsoft’s MS-DOS. This partnership catapulted IBM systems to the desktops and claiming a hefty share of the Desktop market.

Divorce - IBM and Microsoft part ways

But as time goes by, IBM and Microsoft realized that the GUI is the way to go, however, for some reason, IBM chose to take its bet on OS/2 and Microsoft focused on Windows. The outcome of those decisions are evident, Windows holds a heavy chunk of the Desktop market and OS/2 is all but dead.

Personally, I feel that Microsoft got a little too cocky and started on a rampage in taking over the desktop arena. Competitor after competitor, Microsoft pounded them to bankruptcy. Like the once spreadsheet giant of the DOS world, Lotus 1-2-3 (anybody can remember this program) and word processing king Wordstar (I miss those Control Shortcut keys) all of the fell to the sheer momentum of Microsoft and its software products.

Enter the open source movement…

As the dust settles and Microsoft stands at brink of triumph, an event brings forth what is to be known as the Open Source movement. Powered by the passion of countless volunteer developers and companies a like, this movement has now a considerable amount of momentum that It was deemed a threat to Microsoft in the software industry.

Linux, the darling of the open source movement gathered enough following and it provided other individuals and companies to make a stand against the MS juggernaut. touted as more secure and better than Windows, Linux on desktops and servers started eating on the once very big slice of Microsoft. The open source license of Linux spawned different distributions aimed at taking a share in the desktop market. These include RedHat, Suse Linux and the ever propular Ubuntu Linux.

Mozilla Firefox, an open source web browser, effectively ate away Internet Explorer popularity and Opera, introduces features and performance gains for users looking better bang for buck.

The slingshot of the David (IBM) of the software industry.

Now, IBM takes another step in its campaign against Microsoft. It announces that it not upgrade its desktops to Windows Vista, Microsoft’s spanking new kids on the block. In my opinion, this will a catalyst that will push many other companies into moving into Linux. Microsoft better have damn good OS in Windows Vista or it would stand to loose ground.

And so it begins, Linux VS Windows
