Tonight, I pray for my Country - The Philippines
Tonight I pray for my country, The Philippines. Every since Friday morning, February 24, 2006. I watched, listened and plain witnessed the political turmoil that has gripped this nation. Never had I seen such blatant disregard for welfare of the country as a whole.
All I can hear was people asking other people to give up their posts. To make the Ultimate Sacrifice what a person say. And I wonder, What has gone into our people? Now I can fully understand the qoute:
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
And always wonder, what does it feel to be in power? Is it really that addicting that you’d give an arm or leg or plainly sell your soul to stay in power? Now as I write this blog, a group of marines under the leadership of Colonel Querubin, holds their so called “vigil” the Fort Bonifacio. At what cost? Disruption of all school classes the next day? and the peso will again slump against the dollar.
As a christian as I am, I only pray that our leadership begins to realize that this continous bickering will only aggravate the now hard lives of the middle class for I believe that the middle class, along with the Overseas workers are really struggling to keep their families alive and indirectly our country. I can also see that the politicians that continue to hurl accusations on each other, will not really feel if our economy slumps again. For the simple reason, that most of them are now very wealthy.
It’s sad that many people whats to use people power as instrument of correcting goverment. I disagree. People Power only serves as an example how weak our political system is. Here is my opinion why the past demonstrations does not succeed in forcing our LEADER down. It is important these two pre requisites are there.
Trigger must be set…
In 1986, it was the death of Ninoy Aquino that sparked the first people power (also know as EDSA) This was considered a milestone not only our country but in a world of Democracy. It showed the world that revolutions need be bloody as in the case of the revolutions against the spaniards Then there is the voting against the opening for the second envelope in Joseph Estrada’s impeachment case. The senate voted not to open the envelope sending countless people into the streets of EDSA (again) clamoring for a new governement. This became know as EDSA DOS.
And there is the arrest of then Deposed Joseph Estrada. Right after Gloria Macapagal Arroyo took over the government, ERAP as he is famously called, was arrested for corruption charges. His arrest brought his “loyal” supports to the streets of EDSA(again… this is getting tiring) against his arrest.
The first two EDSA’s were successful while the latter did not, why? because it lacks the second pre-requisite.
The Middle Class
The middle class today are the once who is financing this country. They pay their taxes unlike certain big multinational corporations. They support other groups. And just plain help this country out. I cannot really say that masses can contribute to country since they do not pay taxes, work and purchase goods and services to fuel the economy other things.
What essentially happens to poor or masses is that they become pawns by power hungry politicians to do their bidding. It is a wide spread thing that a percentage of poor people in demonstrations are paid to be there either by the government or its enemies. Again it is only the middle class
How about the higher classes? These people wont really feel the disturbances since they up to their necks in cash. And a lot of the businessmen here, actually can avoid paying their taxes. tsk tsk tsk…
All boils down to …
We need to place INTEGRITY in our COUNTRY…
As true as it can get, only integrity and honor can really push this country to be a superpower. Even we keep on changing government. Integrity will hold the key to a more stable government.
I pray to God the Integrity will seep into the government, maybe not in this generation but definitely by the time my children are grown up.
